AVS - ADULT VERIFICATION SERVICE
GUIDE
webmasters: choosing your avs | avs's in comparison | avs basics | avs tricks

What is an AVS? It is a simplistic way of protecting an adult website from minors by presenting internet users with a curtain page that requires them to enter a password to prove their age.  No expert coding knowledge is required, as all of the cgi and html work is done by the AVS company.

Most AVS systems require the user to pay for a membership but some offer free memberships as well.  The same password opens thousands of participating adult sites.

Why should I use an AVS? It is a win-win situation for the internet user and the webmaster.  The internet user gets firm adult verification which allows him to access thousands of participating adult web sites with the same password.  The webmaster gets referral commissions each time an AVS is purchased and other perks, and protects himself by making sure only adults (not minors) can access adult material.
Which AVS should I choose? There are a lot of AVS systems and the choice can be a hard one.  If you are an internet user, it is to your advantage to have memberships with as many AVS's as possible so that you have access to more and more adult sites.  At minimum, get memberships at the free ones.

If you are a webmaster, the choice is much more difficult.  Its usually best to pick one or two AVS's to use on your site.  Each one has their advantages.  To help you, we've listed some key points of the ones we've worked with directly and recommend.

How do I program an AVS? Trust us, you've never done anything easier.  First thing, separate your sensitive (adult content pages) from your clean (welcome) pages.  If you don't have any clean welcome pages make some.  We suggest separating these into two directories.  Your sensitive pages should have a welcome page of their own that will be a map or guide to the rest of the site.  The AVS system will work like this:

clean pages ->
AVS logon -> sensitive pages

When you sign-up with an AVS you will enter the URL of the welcome mat for your sensitive pages, because the AVS automatically sends people there who enter their password correctly.

When you sign-up you will also get a snippet of AVS code.  All you do is place this code in your clean pages as a gateway to the AVS system.

FreeAgeCard plus's minus's

PAYS $25
for free referral

(new)
  • System is free so it attracts a lot of referrals.
  • Pay on time
  • Quick staff setup and review
  • Curtain page easy to implement with just one line of code.  Or no AVS intro needed!
  • It is a rather new AVS so not many people have the passwords yet, so your referral total ($) will be increased.
  • Able to create child entry tracking points!
  • Able to sign-up new sites in real time.
  • Multiple intro pages and stat features.
  • Pay $25 per referral.
  • Site declairs itself to be an adult billing system and not a true AVS, but billing acts 100% the same.  Only problem with this approach is you can advertise their site list on your logon page.
  • Lightly strict with site acceptance, although they do tell you what's wrong and how to fix it.

The skinny: We've used FreeAgeCard  for quite some time without a problem.  Stat system updates click-throughs in real time and is flexible.  The staff there is very responsive to requests and pay on time.  Interface is slick without being overly slick.  Only complaint is its hard to find the site list and you really can't advertise it.  But for $25 per referral, hey, who cares.  Highly recommended. (signup now)

Hint: unlike other AVS's there is a way to sign up users without using the AVS pop-up and logon screens.  After your setup goto sites -> referral code and you'll see a user signup link.  This should be very useful for those who want to make one-click signup links and their own systems.  Great feature.  Also, take advantage of the site's ability to use multiple links.  You can track where your visitors sign up and why.  If you need a host that supports this AVS visit WEBster.

RealFreeAVS plus's minus's

PAYS $15
for free referral
plus you get a free domain name

  • System is free so it attracts a lot of referrals.
  • Pay on time
  • Excellent staff support
  • Curtain page easy to implement with just one line of code.
  • It is a rather new AVS so not many people have the passwords yet, so your referral total ($) will be increased.
  • Able to sign-up new sites in real time.
  • Webmasters get a free domain of their choice (optional).
  • Pay $15 per referral.
  • Stat system is meager, but it is already being improved.
  • No choice on curtain page layout, however, its clean and works great.
  • Update: Site design hasn't changed one iota in over a year.  This has its good and bad points.  They should add more features. However, never any problems in that year.

The skinny:We've used realfreeavs for quite some time without a problem.  The staff there is very responsive to requests and pay on time.  Don't let looks deceive you, it isn't the most flashy AVS but they give quality service and because its so new it is a big money maker.  Highly recommended.

Hint: after you make your fifth sale they offer you a free domain name registration of your choice.  A default control panel comes with their domain, which you can use.  But if you want total control of your free domain name switch your domain's DNS entries at the registry to your website host.  If you need a host that supports this visit WEBster, they handle these configurations all the time.

FreenetPass plus's minus's

PAYS $15
for free referral

  • System is free so it attracts a lot of referrals.
  • Pay on time
  • Excellent staff support
  • Multiple curtain pages, over 30 strong, that can fit your niche site.
  • Just a minor delay in new site setups.
  • Excellent stat system and live tech chat.
  • Pay $15 per referral.
  • Very strict with site acceptance.  Most celeb sites  and some others will be refused.

  • The skinny:We've used Freenet for quite some time without a problem.  The multiple curtain pages give you a little freedom but they for the most part are not resizable.  They are the second leading free AVS on the internet, so many will have their passwords already; however, if you are balancing quality with quantity they are a solid choice.

    Cyberage plus's minus's

    PAYS $14 to $46
    per paid referral
plus 5 to 7 cents per click through.

    • One of the two largest AVS's on the net, well established.
    • Pay on time
    • Excellent support staff
    • Free monthly models
    • Rewards best webmasters with a small fee per click through in addition to their referral fee.
    • Search engine one of the best in the industry.
    • Very professional looking site.
    • Pays $14 to $46
  • One of the two largest AVS's on the net, so most people already have their passwords.
  • Not a free AVS
  • Few hour delay in new site approvals.
  • Must have 30 or more pictures to be listing in their engine.  Other strict guidelines apply.
  • Charge users $20 to $66.

  • The skinny: If you don't want to use a free AVS this is a great choice.  They focus on providing quality content to their clients so we suggest only putting really nice sites on their system.   They are really strict but the quality of their effort shows.

They do reward good webmasters with additional money by adding 5 cents per every "sign-up" click through and 7 cents every time a cyberage user goes through your site with an ID.  So if you have heavy traffic this can be a bonus. (sign up, more details)

    AVS Tricks:
    1. Building traffic: The most accessed web page on an AVS site is your curtain page (where customers enter their password and/or create a password.  New customers as well as internet users coming in from the thousands of participating sites will see this page on every visit.  If you are a member of a link list or a banner exchange, its a good idea to include a banner or two on the bottom of this page.  But remember, this is the doorway to your site so it must be presentable.  If your going to use a banner keep it out of the way and don't use more than one or two or bye-bye users.
    2. Get listed: Each AVS service has a search engine which may or may not list your site.  Being listed is a good thing and will only lead to exposure for your site.  Make sure to follow  your AVS's rules to get listed.  Some require minimum pictures, etc.  If you are worried about visitors taking up bandwidth, well, your losing before you begin.
    3. Style matching: Each AVS's welcome screen has a certain style or flair to it.  Since visitors jump from your curtain pages to the AVS screen back to your content pages, it is important for you to try and match the color scheme of the AVS screens.  This makes your sites look more professional in relation to the AVS.
    4. Teasers: don't put all your content on the inside of your site.  The consumer needs to see what he is buying.  Your outside should look well programmed.
    5. Diversify: Sign up for several AVS systems and test them out.  You will find that one will not produce as well as others for your site.
